The program will include Science on a Sphere presentations, Animal Talks featuring Biozone Ambassador Animals, and hands-on science activities focused on potential and kinetic energy.

McAllen TX - Quinta Mazatlán is celebrating Native Plant Month this October with educational programs, community partners and a featured evening event highlighting the region’s native plant heritage.

The month’s signature event, Planta Nativa VIP Night, will take place Thursday, Oct. 8, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Quinta Mazatlán, with a keynote presentation beginning at 7:30 p.m.

This year’s keynote speaker is Cyrus Harp, a foraging instructor, ethnobiology researcher and Paleolithic technology expert known for his work with Paleo Foraging on YouTube and social media. Harp has spent decades researching how people historically used native plants for food and other purposes and how many of those plants can still be used today. He is also the author of “Native Food Plants of Texas” and will have copies available for purchase and signing during the event.

In addition to the keynote, Planta Nativa VIP Night will feature native plant sales, food and beverage vendors and a small marketplace. Community partners on hand will include The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, American Forests, Texas A&M Forest Service, the Native Plant Society of Texas and the Native Plant Project.

Throughout October, visitors can participate in a variety of educational programs, including the weekly Walk With A Naturalist, Forest Tots, a Thursday evening speaker series and Saturday STEM Stops. Attendees will also have opportunities to explore research posters, participate in a taproot demonstration and receive native seed giveaways.

McAllen TX - McAllen’s ArtWalk kicks off a new season this Friday, with the free monthly event running on the first Friday of each month from September through May.

ArtWalk is a self-guided tour through art studios, museums and galleries in the city’s oldest and most historic neighborhoods, held from 6 to 10 p.m. The event is open to the public.

Popular stops on the tour include the Nuevo Santander Gallery, Art House, the Douglas Clark Gallery, S. Klein Gallery and Manichaus. The recently completed Art Village, a 30,000-square-foot complex housing art studios, galleries, art firms and several restaurants, is also part of the tour.

McAllen TX - The International Museum of Art & Science is accepting artwork submissions for its annual Members’ Juried Art Show through this Friday and Saturday, with drop-off available Oct. 2 and Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the museum.

IMAS members ages 18 and older may submit up to two original works of art for consideration. Artwork must be submitted in person with a completed application.

A guest juror from outside the museum will select works for the exhibition and award Best in Show, Second Place, Third Place, and three Honorable Mentions, each accompanied by a cash prize.

The exhibition will be open to the public Oct. 17, 2026, through Jan. 17, 2027. An opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17, from 3 to 5 p.m., with awards announced at 4 p.m. The reception is free for IMAS members; tickets are available for guests and non-members.

McAllen TX - The McAllen Public Library has announced the South Texas International Book Festival, presented by H-E-B Helping Here, on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Main Library, 4001 N. 23rd St. Festival Day is free and open to the public.

The event, formerly known as the South Texas Book Festival, carries a new name and an expanded international focus. This year’s theme, “Pages to Possibilities,” will be celebrated with author talks, storytimes, book giveaways, meet-and-greets, and activities.

Festival Day Authors

Nine authors are scheduled for the Oct. 24 main event: Reyna Grande, Katherine Center, Huda Fahmy, Saadia Faruqi, Varian Johnson, Ashley Robin Franklin, Chris Barton, Natalia Sylvester, and Shauna J. Grant. Sessions range from storytimes and live drawings to book talks for children, tweens, teens, and adults. Featured discussions include Grande presenting Migrant Heart and Center presenting The Shippers.

Youth Bookmark Design Contest winners will also be announced. Families can pick up copies of the winning bookmarks and books made possible through H-E-B’s Read 3 program and Literacy Texas.

October Programming

The festival’s expanded programming spans the month of October. Pet Week at the Library runs Oct. 3–9, featuring Marty the Library Cat. On Oct. 8, ticket holders can attend “An Evening with Author James Wade,” which includes admission, refreshments, and a copy of his latest novel, Narrow the Road.

Read Around Town Week, Oct. 11–16, will feature “Soñar en Grande: Lorena Ochoa Book Talk” on Oct. 14. The Mexican golf legend will discuss her memoir, Soñar en grande (Dreaming Big), covering her journey from growing up in Mexico to becoming one of the world’s most recognized professional golfers.

On Oct. 17, Maestro Ricardo Morales will lead the Guatemalan Opera Workshop & Concert, featuring a master class for select McAllen ISD music students followed by a concert showcasing regional student performers. Free tickets will be available.

Additional events include “By Design: Katie Pritchett Book Launch” on Oct. 20, a Trick or Treat Trail on Oct. 31, and the series concludes Nov. 10 with “They Hold Grudges: Diana Rojas Book Launch.”

“Becoming the STIBF reflects how much this festival has grown while staying connected to the readers, writers and families who have supported it from the beginning,” said Kate Horan, library director. “This year, we’re creating more opportunities to share stories, discover new authors and experiences, and bring our community together through the love of reading.”

McAllen TX - The Palm View Branch Library will host a book club discussion of Mexican Gothic, a gothic horror novel by Mexican Canadian author Silvia Moreno-Garcia, on Wednesday, Sept. 30, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Study Room A.

Published in 2020, the novel centers on a young woman investigating her cousin’s claims that her husband is trying to murder her. The book landed on bestseller lists and won multiple literary awards, including the Aurora Award for Best Novel, the Locus Award for Best Horror Novel, and the British Fantasy Award for Best Horror Novel. Moreno-Garcia’s writing has drawn comparisons to Daphne du Maurier and Guillermo del Toro.

The novel is set against the backdrop of real Mexican mining ghost towns in the Hidalgo mountains, inspired by British colonial rule and the history of Spanish extraction of gold and silver using Indigenous labor. Moreno-Garcia described those inspirations in an afterword to the novel.

The Palm View Book Club meeting will feature light refreshments and engaging conversation. The event is open to adults 18 and older, including seniors 50 and up. Study Room A has a maximum capacity of 12 people.

McAllen TX - Sesame Street Live: Elmo’s Got the Moves will come to the McAllen Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2026, at 6 p.m. The production is presented by Round Room Live and features Elmo, Abby Cadabby, Cookie Monster, and other Sesame Street characters.

The interactive show encourages children and families to participate through songs, dance moves, and physical activities including yoga, jumping rope, cartwheeling, and dancing. Featured songs include “Sunny Days,” “Elmo’s Got the Moves,” and “Letter of the Day.”

The event, presented by H-E-B Helping Here, is inspired by the 2026 festival theme, “Pages to Possibilities,” and highlights the region’s literary talent, according to the library. This year’s featured authors are Anna Ayala, David Mendoza III, Doug Young, Edward Garza, Erika Balderas-Perez, G.B. Cast, Jeannette Zallar, Jonathan Solis, Ric Quintanilla, Koby J. Almazan, Liz Rodriguez, Lizzy Goldmoon and Victor Benavides.

The program will feature conversations exploring what it takes to bring a story from an idea to publication, with opportunities for guests to hear from the authors, ask questions, and purchase their books.

Library Director Kate Horan said the event opens the festival season. “This is a great way to open our STIBF Presents lineup and set the stage for everything still to come this festival season and we are thrilled,” Horan said.

Mayor Javier Villalobos said the event highlights local talent. “Our region is filled with stories worth sharing,” Villalobos said. “There is something special about seeing the talent in our own backyard take their stories and share them with the world. This showcase celebrates these writers and their unique perspectives.”

City Manager Isaac J. Tawil said the event reflects the library’s commitment to accessible programming. “The McAllen Public Library works incredibly hard to bring the kind of programming you would expect to find in a major city, and then it does something even more important: it makes that experience accessible to everyone,” Tawil said. “What makes this festival especially remarkable is the commitment of the community partners who help make it possible.”

McAllen TX - Quinta Mazatlán will host “Hummingbirds of the RGV” with Urban Ecologist John Brush on Thursday, Sept. 17, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., as part of its Thursday Night Live series.

Hummingbirds are predominantly nectar-feeding birds that use their needle-like bills to reach hidden nectar, according to organizers. Research has shown hummingbird tongues also use a mechanism called “fluid trapping” that complements capillary action, and the birds are known to eat small insects and spiders in addition to nectar.

The event is free with general admission.

South Texas College’s (STC) Ballet Folklorico will take the traditions and culture of the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) to two major Texas sports stages this month, performing for the Dallas Cowboys and Fútbol Club (FC) Dallas in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.

The invitations add to an impressive list of opportunities for the STC dancers, who have previously been invited to perform at Walt Disney World, Disneyland, a San Antonio Spurs game and so much more. Most recently, the group returned from a performance at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida.

For Ballet Folklorico Director Victor Gomez, the opportunities reflect the dancers’ dedication and the support they receive through STC.

“We are so grateful to have these opportunities before us,” he said. “When I broke the news to the dancers, they were all so ecstatic and cheered so loud. These invitations are extremely hard to secure, but their hard work, dedication and desire to succeed make them so deserving of these opportunities.”

Gomez said the performances also give students the chance to experience opportunities they may have never imagined.

“Who would have thought a bunch of Valley kids would be performing on such a grand scale, but yet here we are,” he said. “Some of these dancers have told me that if it wasn’t for this program and STC, they may have never left the Valley or imagined traveling to some of these places.”

Beyond travel and performances, Gomez said the group’s mission is rooted in preserving and sharing Hispanic culture.

Dancer Andrea Arechiga said performing outside the RGV makes the experience even more meaningful.

“It feels so amazing and like a once-in-a-lifetime experience to be able to dance at such a prestigious place,” she said. “Here, everyone understands what Ballet Folklórico is, but as we travel elsewhere, it is not always known. I’m proud to showcase my culture to those who may not know about it.”

For fellow dancer Giandel Rios, the upcoming performances represent both a personal milestone and a way to honor generations before them.

“I was so shocked and not expecting it when we found out,” he said. “It’s such a milestone because we are performing for two sports teams, and it’s very humbling to honor the generations who paved the way for us to have these opportunities and tell our story.”

For Gomez, seeing audiences connect with the performances make every sacrifice worthwhile.

“When we share our culture, we don’t always know how an audience will react,” he said. “But when you see people from different backgrounds recording the performance and reacting to the dances, you feel like they understand. We are proud to represent STC, take our program far beyond the RGV and show what our students can accomplish while promoting the value of higher education.”

Through performances across Texas and beyond, STC Ballet Folklorico continues to give students opportunities to celebrate their heritage, represent the RGV and share their culture with audiences far beyond home.

STC’s Ballet Folklorico will perform on Sept. 19 at the FC Dallas game and Sept. 20 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
