Hidalgo County Moves Forward With Old Courthouse Demolition, Announces Temporary Drive Closure
Report
Hidalgo County has begun the process to demolish the Old Hidalgo County Courthouse in downtown Edinburg, with preparations now visible at the site and work activity expected to increase in the coming weeks.
County officials said the project started Nov. 17, 2025, and is expected to be completed by Sept. 4, 2026, weather permitting. Crews will work Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
An environmental survey of the building has been completed to identify materials requiring removal by licensed professionals before demolition can proceed. The county is working with Noble Texas Builders, the project contractor, to complete cleanup and abatement safely.
During the cleanup phase, nearby residents and businesses may notice increased noise from equipment, debris hauling and hammering. Contractors are expected to use dust control measures and air monitoring throughout the project.
The demolition is occurring alongside construction of a new downtown parking garage by the City of Edinburg, located just north of the courthouse site. Officials cautioned that traffic and pedestrian activity around Courthouse Square will be heavier than usual and urged motorists and visitors to remain alert.
Safety measures during demolition include daily safety audits, dust management using wind screens and water, and adherence to quiet hours after 6 p.m. unless extended work is necessary.
Once demolition is complete, plans for Courthouse Square include additional parking for jurors and visitors and a redesigned meander walkway intended for public use.
Separately, Hidalgo County announced a temporary closure of the New Courthouse circular service drive due to scheduled utility work related to construction of the meander walkway in the northeast corner of Courthouse Square.
The closure begins at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, and continues through Sunday, Dec. 21. Vehicle access to the service drive and accessible parking spaces at the drive entrance will be restricted during that time. The drive is scheduled to reopen at 6 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22.
Visitors to the courthouse during the closure are encouraged to park at the TI parking lot at 207 E. Loeb St. or other designated areas around Courthouse Square. Shuttle service will be available from designated parking locations.
