McAllen, TX - The International Museum of Art & Science is promoting its Science On a Sphere exhibit ahead of spring break, inviting families and students to explore the city-sponsored installation that presents scientific and planetary data through immersive visual displays. City officials said the exhibit provides an opportunity for residents and visiting students to experience science, technology and discovery through interactive presentations.
Program details
Science On a Sphere, designed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration with content from NASA, converts complex planetary and environmental data into visual presentations projected onto a spherical display. The exhibit includes imagery from the Hubble Space Telescope and allows visitors to explore information gathered from orbital satellites, space probes and other scientific sources.
According to the museum, the technology transforms scientific datasets into presentations designed to help audiences better understand Earth systems and space exploration. The exhibit is used during demonstrations and educational programs for students and the public.
City leaders highlighted the exhibit as part of broader efforts to support cultural and educational institutions in the city.
“This investment aligns with the City’s broader vision to make museums more accessible, strengthen community connections, and foster economic growth while enhancing the quality of life for all residents,” said Mayor Javier Villalobos. “Initiatives like this continue to reinforce McAllen’s reputation as a vibrant center for arts, science, and lifelong learning.”
Background
IMAS became the first museum in Texas to house Science On a Sphere when the exhibit opened in September 2008. The museum remains one of only 162 institutions worldwide that operate the technology.
The museum reports that it welcomes more than 60,000 visitors each year, including thousands of students who attend field trips and other educational experiences.
City officials said the exhibit reflects continued investment in learning opportunities for residents and students.
“Supporting institutions like the International Museum of Art & Science reflects the City’s ongoing commitment to investing in educational excellence and community enrichment,” said City Manager Isaac J. Tawil. “Science On a Sphere provides an engaging way for students and families to connect with science, technology, and innovation.”
