McAllen, TX - The International Museum of Art and Science will host the traveling exhibition “Aviary” from March 21 through June 21, showcasing artwork inspired by birds and their presence in landscapes around the world. The exhibition will be included with general museum admission.
Exhibition overview
“Aviary” features works created by approximately 60 master artists who explore the beauty and symbolism of birds through a wide range of materials and artistic techniques. The pieces incorporate materials such as thread, paper and fabric to create detailed textile-based artwork.
Museum officials said the exhibition highlights how artists transform everyday materials into intricate works that reflect the movement, color and character of birds.
Artistic inspiration
The exhibition explores the global connection between artists and birds, which are often seen as reflections of human life while also symbolizing freedom through flight. Each artwork presents a different perspective on birds and their role in natural environments.
Organizers said the collection is intended to immerse visitors in art that celebrates birds as important elements of ecosystems and sources of creative inspiration.
Exhibition background
“Aviary” is based on the book “Stitched Journeys with Birds: Inspiration to Let Your Creativity Take Flight,” published in late 2023 by Schiffer. The book was written by Martha Sielman, executive director of Studio Art Quilt Associates Inc.
The exhibition was created by Studio Art Quilt Associates Inc., an international nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting quilt and textile art.
