McAllen, TX - The McAllen-Brownsville metropolitan area ranked among the nation’s fastest-growing regions in 2025, according to new migration data that highlights continued population growth in South Texas.
Growth index rankings
According to the 2025 U-Haul Growth Index, the McAllen-Brownsville metro area ranked No. 10 nationwide, climbing 11 spots from its position in 2024. The annual index, compiled by U-Haul, analyzes more than 2.5 million one-way moving transactions to track where people are relocating across the United States.
While the index groups McAllen and Brownsville as a single metro area, city officials said the data underscores McAllen’s growing role as a regional center for economic activity and residential growth along the U.S.-Mexico border.
City leaders point to local growth factors
“As the world grows, McAllen is able to grow with it,” said City Manager Isaac J. Tawil, noting the city’s ability to manage growth while continuing to invest in infrastructure and quality of life has positioned McAllen to benefit from broader population shifts.
Residents and newcomers are drawn to McAllen’s relatively affordable cost of living, homeownership opportunities and business-friendly environment, according to city officials. Access to healthcare, education and modern infrastructure have also contributed to the city’s appeal as larger metropolitan areas face rising costs.
Business environment and workforce
City officials cited recent economic development activity showing continued business attraction and expansion across sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, customer service and logistics. These projects have contributed to job creation, private investment and diversification of the local economy.
Employers selecting McAllen often cite workforce availability and a skilled, bilingual labor pool as key factors, particularly in healthcare, logistics and customer service industries. The city’s proximity to the international border also provides access to cross-border trade and regional markets.
Community amenities and quality of life
McAllen officials said investments in parks, trails and cultural amenities have also supported population growth. The city offers more than 1,000 acres of green space, nearly 100 parks and open spaces, and more than 44 miles of hike and bike trails.
“McAllen is a city built around people and families,” said Mayor Javier Villalobos. “Everything from our parks and public spaces to our cultural events reflects our commitment to creating a community where residents feel connected, supported, and proud to call McAllen home.”
Texas growth context
Texas accounted for six of the top 25 fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the 2025 index, including Dallas, Houston, Austin and San Antonio. Local officials said McAllen’s rise reflects a balance between welcoming new residents and maintaining community character and public services.
