Staff Report
McAllen, TX - The McAllen City Commission has scheduled three meetings within the same week to address a range of topics including transit updates, rezonings, infrastructure planning, economic development matters and financial reporting.
Two meetings will take place Monday, March 23 at McAllen City Hall, followed by a special meeting scheduled for Friday, March 27.
Workshop to review agenda items and transit update
The day’s meetings will begin with a City Commission workshop at 4 p.m. Monday, March 23, where commissioners will review upcoming agenda items and receive a presentation on transit services.
City officials may also meet in executive session to consult with legal counsel and discuss economic development matters permitted under Texas law.
Workshops allow commissioners to ask questions and receive detailed briefings from staff before formal action is taken at later meetings.
Joint meeting with Public Utility Board
At 4:45 p.m., commissioners will hold a joint meeting with the McAllen Public Utility Board to consider approval of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report for fiscal year 2024-2025.
The joint session will also include proclamations recognizing the McAllen High School Boys Basketball Team, Ava Aragon Day and the Great American Cleanup initiative.
In addition to the joint agenda item, commissioners will conduct a public hearing on multiple zoning requests and conditional use permits, many of which have received favorable recommendations from the Planning and Zoning Commission.
Proposed zoning changes include updates to align properties with the city’s Unified Development Code, as well as requests affecting residential, commercial and industrial properties throughout McAllen.
Other agenda items include:
Contract approvals and grant compliance services
Lease agreements at McAllen International Airport
Budget amendments for infrastructure projects including Shary Road and Mile 9 Road improvements
Variance requests related to subdivision development
Advisory board appointments and future agenda items
Special meeting to address economic development matters
Commissioners will also convene a special meeting at noon on Friday, March 27 to discuss economic development matters in executive session.
Executive session discussions allow the commission to consult with legal counsel and deliberate on issues related to real property, personnel matters and economic development negotiations under provisions of the Texas Open Meetings Act.
Multiple meetings scheduled same week
City officials noted that holding multiple meetings allows commissioners to review detailed information and address time-sensitive items related to city planning, infrastructure and economic development.
All meetings will take place in the City Commission Chambers on the third floor of McAllen City Hall, located at 1300 Houston Avenue.
