McAllen, TX - The McAllen City Commission will hold a workshop and regular meeting Monday, March 9, at McAllen City Hall to discuss infrastructure projects, zoning requests and grant applications.
Workshop session
Commissioners will meet for a workshop at 4 p.m. in the City Commission Chambers to review items on the evening agenda and ask questions of city staff. The workshop agenda also includes a presentation on proposed median upgrades along FM 2220 (Ware Road) from SH 107 to Auburn Avenue.
The workshop may also include discussion in executive session regarding real property matters and critical infrastructure facilities.
Regular meeting
The regular meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. and will begin with the Pledge of Allegiance and an invocation, followed by proclamations recognizing Texas High School Coaches Association Coach of the Year Felicia Ramirez and Grant Professional’s Day honoree Julia Lash.
Commissioners will then open a public hearing that includes several rezoning requests and conditional use permit considerations. One request seeks approval for an event center known as Casa Luna at 5245 North 23rd Street. Other agenda items include multiple city-initiated rezonings related to the transition from the city’s previous development code to the Unified Development Code.
Consent agenda and contracts
The commission is also expected to consider several items on the consent agenda, including approval of meeting minutes, construction contracts and airport improvements. Among those items are contracts related to street repaving projects and the purchase of hot mix asphalt for roadway work.
Commissioners will also consider change orders for improvements to passenger boarding bridges at McAllen International Airport and upgrades to a fuel station and bus wash facility for the city’s transit department.
Grants and agreements
Several resolutions on the agenda involve grant applications and interlocal agreements. The city plans to seek up to $9 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation through the Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development grant program.
Another grant application would request up to $815,000 from the Office of the Governor through the State and Homeland Security Program. Additional agenda items include agreements with Hidalgo County for road reconstruction projects and park improvements.
Executive session
The commission may also enter executive session to discuss real property negotiations, personnel matters and economic development issues before returning to open session to take possible action.
