The McAllen City Commission is expected to call a special election to fill a vacancy in Single Member District 5, following the departure of former commissioner Victor “Seby” Haddad.
District 5 vacancy and special election call
City commissioners are scheduled to consider an ordinance calling a special city election for May 2, 2026. The District 5 seat became vacant after Haddad stepped down and launched a campaign for the Democratic nomination in Texas House District 41.
If approved, the ordinance would formally set the election timeline, polling locations and early voting schedule for the single-district race.
Candidate filing and election timeline
According to city documents, the last day to file for a place on the special election ballot is Friday, Feb. 13, at 5 p.m. Early voting is scheduled to run from April 20 through April 28, with polls open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Early voting locations will include the Fireman’s Pump House, Lark Community Center and Palm View Community Center.
Election Day details and possible runoff
On Election Day, District 5 voters will cast ballots at McAllen High School, with polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The ordinance also authorizes the appointment of presiding judges and alternate judges for early voting and Election Day.
A runoff election date would be announced if no candidate receives the required majority of votes.
Next steps
The ordinance approval is scheduled as part of the McAllen City Commisisoners’ regularly scheduled meetiong ng agenda, allowing the city to proceed with the special election process to fill the District 5 seat.
