McAllen News, McAllen TX News, retirement affordability
Staff Report
McAllen, TX - McAllen and several neighboring Hidalgo County cities are gaining national attention as some of the most affordable places to retire in the United States, according to rankings by U.S. News & World Report that evaluate cost of living, housing affordability and overall value for retirees.
Among the Valley communities highlighted, McAllen stands out not only for its low cost of living but also for the breadth of amenities and cultural resources available to residents. The rankings place McAllen among the cheapest places to retire nationwide, alongside Mission, Edinburg and Pharr, reinforcing the region’s growing reputation as a retirement-friendly area.
Affordable living with urban amenities
McAllen consistently ranks well for retirees living on fixed incomes, thanks to lower-than-average housing costs, no state income tax and comparatively affordable health care. But local officials and community leaders say affordability is only part of the appeal.
As the largest city in Hidalgo County, McAllen offers a range of amenities typically found in much larger metro areas. The city is home to the McAllen Performing Arts Center, which hosts Broadway tours, concerts and national touring acts, as well as year-round community performances.
Arts, culture and outdoor spaces
McAllen also features major cultural attractions such as the International Museum of Art & Science, offering rotating exhibitions, educational programming and science-based activities for all ages. For retirees seeking outdoor recreation, the city provides access to nature-focused spaces like Quinta Mazatlán, a historic adobe estate and birding sanctuary that hosts guided walks, concerts and environmental programs.
The city’s parks system includes walking trails, community centers and fitness programs geared toward older adults, while nearby shopping districts, medical offices and dining options add convenience for daily living.
Regional appeal for retirees
Across Hidalgo County, neighboring cities such as Mission, Edinburg and Pharr also benefit from the Valley’s warm climate, expanding health care infrastructure and proximity to higher education institutions. Together, the region offers retirees access to cultural festivals, local history, cross-border tourism and a strong sense of community.
With affordability remaining a top concern for retirees nationwide, analysts say McAllen’s combination of low living costs, cultural offerings and access to services positions it as a competitive alternative to traditional retirement destinations.
