McALLEN TX - The City of McAllen Parks & Recreation Department officially opened its new Multipurpose Pavilion with a ribbon cutting celebration that included the announcement of a partnership with the Dallas Stars Hockey Club to bring hockey programming and sports development opportunities to the Rio Grande Valley.
The new facility is designed as a flexible recreational venue that will host hockey programs, fitness classes, youth activities, community events, and year-round programming. City officials described the pavilion as a continued investment in accessible recreation for local families and a space aimed at removing barriers to participation in youth sports.
City Manager Ike Tawil framed the opening in broad terms. “This pavilion represents far more than a building,” Tawil said. “It represents opportunity for our children, stronger connections for our families, and continued investment in the quality of life that makes McAllen such a special community. We are proud to partner with the Dallas Stars to bring new experiences and expanded recreational opportunities to the Rio Grande Valley.”
Dallas Stars Partnership
The partnership with the Dallas Stars is expected to introduce hockey programming and sports development pathways for local youth and families. Two Dallas Stars executives spoke at the event.
Al Montoya, Vice President of Cultural Growth and Strategy for the Dallas Stars, described the moment as an emotional one. “It felt incredibly emotional to see the excitement from the kids and families as they stepped into this new space,” Montoya said. “You could see it in their faces. For many of us, the love of hockey started with simply having a place to play and dream. That is what this partnership is about. We want young people in the Rio Grande Valley to know this sport belongs to them too, and we are excited to help grow the game and create lasting opportunities through this beautiful new facility.”
Matt Bowman, Chief Revenue Officer for the Dallas Stars, pointed to the broader impact the facility is expected to have. “The energy inside the pavilion today showed exactly why partnerships like this matter,” Bowman said. “This facility creates opportunities for youth development, healthy lifestyles, and meaningful community engagement. We are excited to work alongside the City of McAllen to expand access to hockey and create memorable experiences for families across the Valley.”
About the Facility
The Multipurpose Pavilion is expected to serve as a regional hub for recreation, youth sports, wellness programming, and community events. City officials said the facility is intended to help youth build confidence, develop healthy habits, and access sports programming close to home.
