McAllen, TX - The City of McAllen has proclaimed the week of Feb. 9, 2026, as National Burn Awareness Week, joining communities nationwide in promoting burn prevention and home safety awareness.
City leaders and public safety officials recognized the observance during a regularly scheduled City Commission meeting, emphasizing that many burn injuries are preventable. Officials cited cooking accidents, hot liquids, electrical hazards and malfunctioning smoke alarms as leading causes of burn-related injuries.
Community outreach event
As part of National Burn Awareness Week activities, the McAllen Fire Department will partner with the trauma team from DHR Health to host an educational outreach event Saturday, Feb. 14, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the McAllen Farmers Market at the McAllen Public Library.
Firefighters and medical professionals will provide hands-on education, distribute safety materials and answer questions from residents about reducing burn risks at home.
Fire safety reminders
The McAllen Fire Department is encouraging residents to follow several burn prevention practices, including turning pot handles inward while cooking, testing smoke detectors monthly and replacing batteries at least twice a year.
Additional recommendations include never leaving candles or space heaters unattended and keeping matches, lighters and hot appliances out of children’s reach.
