Staff Report
McAllen, TX - As the holiday season increases household waste, the City of McAllen is encouraging residents to recycle and compost natural materials as part of its ongoing sustainability efforts.
Through the City of McAllen Public Works Department, organic waste such as leaves, grass clippings, brush and holiday trees is processed into nutrient-rich compost and mulch at the McAllen Compost Facility. City officials say the program helps reduce landfill waste while supporting healthier lawns, gardens and landscaping projects throughout the community.
How composting benefits McAllen
Public Works officials said composting diverts organic material from landfills, reducing methane emissions and lowering the need for chemical fertilizers by returning nutrients to the soil naturally. McAllen’s Compost Facility has produced Class A compost and mulch since 2004 as part of the city’s long-term environmental strategy.
Residents can use the finished compost as mulch around plants, mix it into garden beds or potted plants, or apply it to lawns to promote stronger turf. Specialty products are also available, including premium compost, stump mulch and a 50/50 compost-topsoil blend for planting projects.
Holiday recycling reminders
City officials also shared holiday recycling tips, reminding residents that paper gift wrap and cardboard gift boxes without glitter can be recycled. Plastic toys, stuffed animals, electronics, artificial trees, lights and decorations should not be placed in recycling bins and are instead encouraged for reuse or donation when possible.
Christmas tree recycling begins Dec. 26
Beginning Dec. 26, residents may recycle natural Christmas trees by dropping them off at the McAllen Compost Facility, where the trees will be processed into mulch. Officials noted that ornaments, lights and stands must be removed before drop-off.
Facility hours and access
The McAllen Compost Facility is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. City leaders encouraged residents to take advantage of composting services year-round to help reduce waste and protect the environment.
More information about McAllen’s composting program is available through the city’s Public Works Department.
