McAllen, TX - The McAllen Public Library is continuing registration for its Art Pathways Contest, a youth art competition encouraging participants to create original artwork inspired by a favorite book.
The contest is open to participants ages 5 to 18 with an active McAllen Public Library card. Free starter kits that include an 8-by-10-inch canvas, acrylic paint and brushes are available at library circulation desks while supplies last.
Program details
Participants are asked to read a book and create an original painting illustrating a scene, moment or detail from the story. Artwork must incorporate Marty the Library Cat, the library’s mascot.
Contest guidelines specify one entry per participant. Submissions must include a short artist statement and be completed using acrylic paint on the provided canvas.
Artwork submission deadline is May 8.
Awards
Participants will compete in three age groups: 5 to 8, 9 to 13 and 14 to 18. First-, second- and third-place winners will be recognized at each library branch.
First-place winners will receive an iPad and Apple Pencil. Second-place winners will receive wireless headphones. Third-place winners will receive a $100 gift card.
An awards ceremony is scheduled for June 11 at 6 p.m.
Participation locations
Registration and kit pickup are available at all McAllen Public Library locations, including Main Library, Lark Branch Library and Palm View Branch Library.
