Staff Report
McAllen, TX - The McAllen Public Library has introduced a new resource aimed at supporting teen wellness with the launch of its Teen Essential Shelf, a “grab-what-you-need” space offering free personal care items.
Library officials said the Teen Essential Shelf is designed to provide teens with discreet, no-questions-asked access to essential hygiene products, along with information on mental health resources available to teens and their families. The initiative repurposes an existing bookshelf into an easily accessible support station within the library.
Supporting teen well-being
The Teen Essential Shelf reflects the library’s broader mission to serve as a safe and welcoming space for young people. By offering everyday essentials at no cost, the program helps reduce barriers for teens who may need assistance while normalizing conversations around self-care and mental health.
Community support and donations
Library staff credited the program’s success to donations from community members and support from the library’s Teen Advisory Committee. Officials said the committee played a key role in identifying needs and helping coordinate donations to keep the shelf stocked.
