McAllen, TX - The McAllen Public Library will host a community biodiversity event titled “Go Out and Get Native!” on March 21 at the Main Library. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon and will focus on learning about native plants and wildlife found in the Rio Grande Valley.
Event overview
The program will include a presentation and outdoor activities centered on the library’s Tiny Forest area. Participants will learn about the biodiversity of the Rio Grande Valley from local urban ecologist John Brush of Quinta Mazatlan.
Organizers said the event is part of Lola Mejia’s Girl Scout Gold Award project. The initiative is designed to encourage community members to learn about native ecosystems and the importance of local plant species.
Educational activities
Members of the library’s Teen Advisory Committee will install educational signs labeling native plants in the Tiny Forest during the event. The signage will help visitors identify plant species and understand their role in supporting wildlife and local habitats.
Library officials said the event will include hands-on outdoor learning activities intended to engage participants of all ages.
Community participation
The program is open to the public and welcomes participants of all ages. Girl Scouts attending the event will have the opportunity to earn a “Go Out and Get Native!” patch for participating in the activities.
The event will be held at the McAllen Public Library Main Library, located at 4001 N. 23rd St.
