McAllen, TX - The McAllen Public Library will host “Go Out and Get Native!” on March 21 as part of its Teen Naturalist Club, offering hands-on environmental education activities focused on native plants and wildlife in the Rio Grande Valley. The program will take place from 10 a.m. to noon at the Main Library.
Program overview
The event will combine an educational presentation with outdoor exploration activities in the library’s Tiny Forest. Participants will learn about native plants, butterflies and birds commonly found in the region, followed by a BioBlitz-style activity using the iNaturalist app to identify species on site.
The program is presented in partnership with Quinta Mazatlán and local Girl Scouts councils. Organizers said the initiative is designed to engage teens and families in environmental awareness through interactive learning experiences.
Teen-led project
Members of the library’s Teen Advisory Committee will lead a project to install plant identification signage throughout the Tiny Forest. Each sign will include the plant’s common and scientific names along with descriptive information.
Library officials said the project is intended to create a long-term educational resource while allowing teen volunteers to contribute to the community.
Community impact
Library Director Kate Horan said the program gives teens an opportunity to learn while also giving back through hands-on involvement. City officials said the initiative highlights collaboration between local organizations and youth to support environmental stewardship.
The program is free and open to the public, and Girl Scouts who attend may fulfill patch requirements.
