McAllen, TX - McAllen Memorial High School senior Hugo Rodriguez committed to compete in baseball at Texas A&M University-Kingsville during a ceremony held Feb. 11, 2026, at the Memorial High gym.
Rodriguez plays pitcher and outfielder for the Mustangs. As a freshman, he received Newcomer of the Year honors. As a junior, he was named second-team All-District pitcher. He plans to major in kinesiology at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
University and program background
Texas A&M University-Kingsville competes in NCAA Division II as a member of the Lone Star Conference. The program is led by head coach Jason Gonzales, who was hired in 2008 and is the program’s all-time winningest coach with 492 victories. Under his leadership, the Javelinas have recorded winning seasons in 13 of his 17-plus seasons, made 14 Lone Star Conference tournament appearances and advanced to six NCAA Division II regional tournaments.
In 2018, the Javelinas won the South-Central Regional title and qualified for the NCAA Division II College World Series for the first time in school history. The program also secured its first conference tournament championship under Gonzales in 2013 and appeared in 13 consecutive Lone Star Conference tournaments from 2010 through 2023. During Gonzales’ tenure, the program has produced five All-Americans and 96 All-Conference selections.
Rodriguez’s parents are Hugo and Karla Rodriguez.
