About Quinta Mazatlán
Quinta Mazatlán is a 20-acre Tamaulipan Thornforest property and part of the World Birding Center network, which links protected natural areas from South Padre Island to Roma. The site is anchored by a 10,000-square-foot Spanish Revival-style adobe mansion — one of the largest adobe structures in Texas — built in 1935 as a private residence. After more than 60 years in private hands, the City of McAllen purchased the property in 1998 following a public campaign to prevent its demolition, and opened it in 2006 as what officials describe as “a mansion with a mission.” The site offers gardens, Spanish architecture and programming focused on birds, native plants and environmental stewardship in South Texas.
