McAllen TX - Reliant and the City of McAllen launched the second year of the Beat the Heat program Tuesday, June 10, opening three community cooling centers to help residents stay cool during summer temperatures in the Rio Grande Valley. Reliant is donating $6,200 to support the effort and providing 52 fans to be distributed to those in need at all three locations.
Mayor Javier Villalobos, City Manager Isaac J. Tawil, Parks & Recreation Director Denny Meline, and Reliant Regional Manager Anna Delano marked the program’s debut at a press conference held at 11 a.m. at Las Palmas Community Center, 1921 N. 25th St.
The three cooling centers provide a free, air-conditioned space where residents can escape the heat while enjoying water, snacks, and activities. Energy-saving resources and information on bill payment assistance are also available at each location.
Cooling Center Locations and Hours
Lark Community Center, 2601 Lark Ave.: Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; closed Sunday.
Las Palmas Community Center, 1921 N. 25th St.: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; closed Saturday and Sunday.
Palm View Community Center, 3401 Jordan Road: Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; closed Sunday.

Reliant’s CARE program has provided more than $18 million to help Texans with electricity costs since 2002. Residents who need help paying their electricity bill may call 2-1-1 within Texas or visit 211texas.org. Reliant customers may also contact the company at 1-866-222-7100, through online chat, or via the Reliant app.
