McAllen, TX - Young accordion players from across Texas and beyond are being encouraged to apply for the 2026 edition of The Big Squeeze, a statewide accordion competition that highlights emerging talent and diverse musical traditions.
Presented by Texas Folklife, the annual competition is now accepting applications from youth accordionists, with a submission deadline of Jan. 7, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. CST.
Celebrating accordion traditions
Now in its 20th year, The Big Squeeze showcases a wide range of musical styles rooted in Texas’ cultural heritage. Eligible youth performers may apply in genres that include zydeco, Cajun, conjunto/Tejano/Norteño, classical and polka, among others.
Competition organizers said the program is designed to spotlight young musicians, provide performance opportunities and encourage the preservation and evolution of accordion-based music traditions.
Opportunities for young musicians
Selected participants advance through preliminary rounds, with finalists earning the chance to perform on prominent stages and gain exposure to audiences, musicians and cultural leaders from across the state. The competition has helped launch and support the careers of many young accordionists over the years.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted online by the Jan. 7 deadline. Additional information, eligibility requirements and application materials are available through Texas Folklife.
